BE&K Building Group, as part of a joint venture, provided construction management at risk services for the all-new Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children (BRHFC) — a high-profile project within the local Birmingham community and a noticeable addition to the city’s skyline, complete with helipad. The free-standing, high-rise pediatric expansion facility, constructed on the existing Children’s Hospital of Alabama campus, increased the hospital’s number of licensed specialty pediatric beds from 275 beds to 332 beds.

The new facility has 48 bassinets (sixth floor), a 50,000 square foot emergency department with 49 exam/treatment rooms and 16 operating rooms, two cath labs and interventional radiology. The building is served by 21 elevators with total of 150 stops. Two shelled upper floors will allow for future expansion, eventually increasing the hospital’s total capacity to 356 beds. The fifth floor is dedicated to mechanical equipment.

The project was initiated to replace the existing, outdated space-deficient facility; enable the hospital to expand services provided to pediatric patients; improve operating efficiencies; address growth in the pediatric population served; and increase access to family-centered services, as well as provide an environment conducive to improving and expanding pediatric teaching and research.
