In February 2014, Pernix Group’s subsidiary, Pernix (Fiji) Ltd., was awarded a $30 million contract by the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) to build a new 36 megawatt (MW) power plant adjacent to the existing Kinoya Power Station in Suva, Republic of Fiji. The contract scope included the design, construction, installation and commissioning of a power house consisting of four heavy fuel oil power generating sets with associated auxiliaries. The engines, manufactured by Wartsila, are W20V32 type diesel engines. During construction, in December 2014, Pernix was awarded a separate $4 million contract for the Kinoya Greenfield Power Station 11kV/33kV Substation Project located at the same site. This substation was integrated to the project utilizing the new electrical building and adjacent space. Siemens Switchgear and Wilson Transformer were the two major suppliers for the substation project.
Construction of the plant was completed in November 2015. Pernix managed the two independent contracts seamlessly which resulted in both projects completed free of lost time incidents with more than 382,000 man-hours logged for the Kinoya Expansion Project with an additional 15,000 man-hours documented for the 33kV system in 2015.
In December 2015, Pernix was awarded a 13 year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the completed 36 MW Kinoya Expansion Plant. Our team has a long and successful tenure in the Fijian power industry, including the management of the expansion, upgrade and ongoing operations of the two largest power plants in Fiji. Including the recently completed expansion, Pernix currently operates and maintains the power plants with 108 MW of base load generation capacity under long-term contracts running through 2028.
